Effect of root canal treatment on the adhesion of fiberglass posts

Abstract

Root canal preparation is crucial for the bond strength of fiberglass posts bonded with self-adhesive and self-curing resins. This study aims to examine how various canal preparation techniques can affect post bonding by evaluating the performance of two resin cements: Multilink (self-curing) and RelyX U100 (self-adhesive). For this purpose, an experimental study was conducted in a dental laboratory using 34 endodontically treated mandibular premolars; various root canal preparation procedures were implemented and the fiberglass posts were then bonded with both types of resin. The findings indicated that Multilink cement exhibited an average strength of 30.6 kg, while RelyX U100 achieved an average strength of 24.2 kg; however, no statistically significant differences were detected between the two cement types. Also, in addition to the type of cement used, other factors such as the root canal unfilling procedure, post geometry and bonding conditions can affect bond strength. This results provide significant data for optimizing clinical procedures for post consolidation in restorative dentistry.
