Abstract

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is one of the leading causes of infant mortality, characterized by the unexpected death of an infant under one year of age, usually during sleep, with no identifiable cause. This literature review aims to describe the possible causes, risk factors, and preventive strategies that have been developed for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). For this research, an exhaustive search was conducted in scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar.  In this study, it was determined that risk factors associated with SIDS include sleeping position, exposure to tobacco smoke, inappropriate surfaces and overheating, while breastfeeding has been identified as a protective factor. Preventive strategies include parental education and infant health monitoring, in addition to technological advances such as apnea monitors. Emotional support to affected families is crucial to mitigate the psychological impact of SIDS, therefore, bereavement counseling is essential.
