Tooth preparation in three-unit fixed bridges

Edentulism is a common challenge in today's society, resulting from various causes that affect chewing function as well as the patient's quality of life and emotional well-being. In response to this problem, fixed bridges are an effective solution, among them, three-unit bridges that are frequently used to restore edentulous spaces and improve dental aesthetics. This type of prosthesis involves replacing a missing tooth using two abutment teeth located at both ends of the space, which must be carefully evaluated in terms of their coronal and root condition before proceeding with the preparation. The stability and strength of the bridge depend on the health of these abutment teeth, which requires additional examinations, such as X-rays, to assess the condition of the periodontal ligament. Subsequently, an impression is taken and plaster models are generated to facilitate the carving process, which helps to ensure a final prosthesis that not only offers functionality but also the aesthetic characteristics desired by the patient.
