Determination of the prevalence of fluorosis in Afro-Ecuadorian population in the community of Mascarilla

The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of dental fluorosis in the Afro-Ecuadorian population of Mascarilla community and its possible relationship with the concentration of fluoride in drinking water. It was investigated the possible correlation between water quality and the incidence of this dental enamel alteration, characterized by changes in its structure and coloration. For this purpose, a correlational approach methodology with a mixed design was used and the clinical evaluation of the dentition in participants was combined with the chemical analysis of drinking water to determine its fluoride levels. The study included direct clinical observation through dental examinations, as well as the collection and analysis of water samples to measure fluoride concentration. The results indicated a significant prevalence of dental fluorosis in the community, affecting 77% of the population evaluated. However, chemical analysis of the water showed a fluoride concentration of 1.16 ppm, within the recommended reference values. Consequently, the findings did not evidence a direct relationship between drinking water consumption and the high incidence of dental fluorosis, suggesting the need to explore other etiological factors associated with this condition in the community.
