Nursing intervention in the promotion of breastfeeding in preterm infants
Abstract
Preterm birth represents a significant challenge for the health and development of neonates; that is why breastfeeding is considered a key factor in its favorable evolution. However, physiological immaturity and difficulties associated with sucking and swallowing can hinder this process, requiring specialized intervention by nursing staff. The objective of this research is to describe the current role of nursing in the promotion and management of breastfeeding in preterm infants. The methodology used was based on the applied qualitative-quantitative, non-experimental and descriptive approach, using a systematic review of the literature according to the PRISMA method. A total of 110 scientific articles were analyzed, from which, after the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 relevant studies were selected. The findings highlight that nursing plays a crucial role in the promotion of breastfeeding, ensuring the correct feeding of the newborn and emotional and educational support to mothers. The strategies identified include the promotion of skin-to-skin contact, the expression and preservation of breast milk, and the implementation of assisted feeding techniques, which ensures optimal development of the preterm infant.
