Abstract

Introduction: The stomatognathic system is closely related to the position of the head on the cervical spine. Postural alterations in the cervical spine affect the stomatognathic system, which can be associated with the development of malocclusions or vice versa.

Objective: To analyze the occlusal and skeletal characteristics of patients with postural alterations in physical therapy centers, from the city of Ambato.

Method: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of three people with descending postural syndromes, previously diagnosed by their specialist, attending three physiological centers in the city of Ambato. A data collection matrix was used to record the results of the analysis of the study models and cephalometric radiographs.

Results: There were cases of scoliosis, lordosis and kyphosis. There was a predominance of bilateral Class II in its molar and canine version, increased incisive extrusion and only one subject had a decreased interincisive angle. Regarding the skeletal problem, there was a predominance of Class II and two of the three participants, had an elevated lower facial height.

Conclusions: All patients presented increased convexity (Class II) and two of the three participants presented elevated lower facial height (skeletal open bite). Regarding the dento-skeletal problem, Class III was general in the position of the upper first molar, one patient presented elevated position of the lower incisor and two, elevated positions of the upper incisor.
