Drugs used in odontogenic infections. Current review
Abstract
Introduction: Odontogenic infections are generally located in the cervical and facial anatomical cavities, they are potentially fatal and can be treated by conventional pharmacological therapies.
Objective: To identify the most commonly used drugs in odontogenic infections, according to current reviews of the last five years.
Method: Review article, supported by documentary methodology, using the digital database PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar, with inclusive criteria of complete review articles and case reports, published between 2019-2024, in English and Spanish.
Development: The use of antibiotics was recommended, in the 13 articles selected, for 100 % with a prevalence of 69.24 % to use ceftriaxone, followed by 38.46 % with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid as treatment for the control of odontogenic infections, while 23.93 % suggested amoxicillin, metronidazole and clindamycin. The use of NSAIDs and analgesics was recommended in 15.38 %, whereas 7.69 % suggested the use of anesthetics, antitetanus and anti-inflammatory drugs to improve symptoms of odontogenic infections.
Conclusions: Pharmacological use should be rational, based on diagnosis, anamnesis and complementary investigations for the best treatment according to the pathogen involved and the complication detected; therefore, performing the clinical evaluation of each patient is relevant to consider the respective pharmacokinetic parameters.
