Current status of prevention and treatment of peri-implantitis
Abstract
Introduction: Peri-implantitis, is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding dental implants, characterized by inflammation and bone loss in the implant site, manifested by symptoms such as bleeding on probing, suppuration and implant mobility.
Objective: To describe the current status of prevention and treatment of peri-implantitis.
Method: The studies obtained were analyzed and their selection was made according to the exclusion and inclusion criteria. The bibliographic search was carried out in different electronic databases such as SciELO, Wiley, PubMed and Elsevier.
Development: Although significant advances have been made in the treatment of peri-implantitis, further research is considered necessary to standardize therapeutic protocols, better understand the host response to peri-implant therapy, and evaluate the long-term efficacy of current treatment approaches.
Conclusions: Identifying and addressing specific risk factors to prevent and treat peri-implantitis is critical. Nonsurgical treatment, supplemented with measures such as local and systemic antimicrobials, has been reported to be effective in the early stages of peri-implantitis. The usefulness of surgical approaches in more advanced cases is recognized.
