Euthanasia in medical practice in Ecuador. Ethical and legal aspects
Abstract
Introduction: Euthanasia is a human action, active or passive, aimed at death. This decision, motivated by the cessation of suffering caused by some trigger, may induce the patient to opt for this practice.
Objective: To describe the current state of euthanasia in the medical practice of Ecuador, as well as its social and ethical repercussions.
Method: A systematic literature review was carried out using the PRISMA method on euthanasia in the medical practice of Ecuador, its ethical and legal dilemmas. The search for scientific information was done in the following databases: PubMed, SCOPUS, ELSEVIER and BMJ (Journal of Medical Ethics). Thirty-three articles were selected.
Development: Autonomy as a bioethical principle allows the person to decide on ending his or her pain, but this principle is often not complied with, due to the lack of a structured legislation that allows the individual to decide on his or her destiny, as long as this is guided by reasoning and is objective.
Conclusions: Euthanasia at the ethical and legal level in Ecuador, should allow the applicant access to this practice, as long as it is free, voluntary, with limited or no quality of life and without their decisions being manipulated by third parties, as this would go against his individual autonomy as a human being.
