Renal replacement therapy for acute kidney failure

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Acute kidney injury is one of the most important entities in the field of Critical Care Medicine, since its incidence in hospitalized patients has increased in recent years.

Objective: To describe the risk factors associated with mortality and recovery of renal function in patients with acute renal failure treated with renal replacement therapy (RRT).

Method: A search was carried out in different bibliographies in SciELO, Elsevier, Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Sciences databases in English and Spanish. Ten articles were analyzed, using inclusion and exclusion criteria such as: timeliness of the information, approach with which it will be developed, information from reliable sources, taking into account that not all articles had the information required for this one. The years 2019-2023 were taken in order to collect information from the latest studies of renal replacement therapy for acute renal failure with its pathophysiology.

Development: Several studies that have found the procedure of renal replacement therapy for acute renal failure, express that it has evolved and thus, has decreased the risk of complications and recurrences.

Conclusions: Renal replacement therapy for acute renal failure is the common renal support modality in patients with acute renal failure in intensive care; however, not all hospital centers have this modality and, on the contrary, they have machines for intermittent hemodialysis.
