Treatment update for patients with folliculitis decalvans
Abstract
Folliculitis is a common, usually benign skin condition in which the hair follicle becomes inflamed and forms an erythematous pustule or papule of hair-covered skin. It is a non-life-threatening condition and in most cases is self-limiting; it can present challenges for immunocompromised patients and in some cases the disease can progress to chronic stages.
Appropriate diagnostic methods, including microscopy or biopsy, are essential to confirm the diagnosis of folliculitis and ensure initiation of adequate antifungal treatment, which are considered difficult to find. Turpentine derivatives have traditionally been used to treat skin infections and may also be effective in the treatment of folliculitis.
In several studies of treatment for this disease, good results were obtained from treatments with turpentine ointment, a comparator (povidone iodine solution) or a placebo (petroleum jelly), for 7 days. A decrease in follicular lesion count was detected. Further clinical studies are suggested to analyse its effectiveness and efficacy as a treatment for this condition.
This research consists of an observational, descriptive and retrospective study focusing on the search for information in a reliable database; it is a bibliographic, systemic and meta-analysis review of the treatment of patients with folliculitis decalvans. The main objective of this review is to expose the most opportune and correct treatments for this pathology.
