Epidemiological and humoral characteristics of children with comorbidity of COVID-19 and diabetes mellitus

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic posed a challenge for children with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, a condition characterized by problems in glucose control due to a lack of insulin or resistance to it.
Objective: To describe the epidemiological and humoral characteristics of children with comorbidity of COVID-19 and diabetes mellitus.
Method: For this research, a systematic review of articles related to children with comorbidity of COVID-19 and diabetes mellitus was conducted using the PRISMA methodology. This follows a structured methodology that includes an exhaustive search for data in databases such as PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, Redalic, and Google Scholar, using specific descriptors in publications covering the last five years. The selection criteria include clinical and observational studies reporting hyperglycemia in patients with COVID-19, and those without specific data on diabetes and COVID-19 are excluded.
Development: The studied cases presented alterations such as a hyperglycemic state. It was demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 can cause severe metabolic imbalances and even promote the emergence of new diabetes. It highlights the relevance of metabolic monitoring and early management of hyperglycemia in children with COVID-19 and diabetes to prevent problems and reduce the mortality rate. Conclusions: The interrelation between diabetes and COVID-19 underscores the need for a multifaceted and personalized approach in the treatment of these patients; careful management of hyperglycemia, control of comorbidities, and the implementation of comprehensive support strategies are essential to improve clinical outcomes and reduce mortality.Downloads
