Introduction: The use of contraceptive methods is an essential strategy for preventing unintended pregnancies and controlling sexually transmitted infections; therefore, understanding and properly applying these methods is crucial, as it ensures the sexual and reproductive health of sexually active individuals. The university setting is well-suited for exploring these topics due to the diversity of its academic programs and the heterogeneity of its student body.
Objective: To assess the level of knowledge regarding contraceptive methods among medical students at the Autonomous Regional University of the Andes, Ibarra Campus, during the period from May to September 2024.
Method: A non-experimental, descriptive study was conducted. The population consisted of 710 university students, and a final sample of 251 students was selected using simple random sampling. Data collection was carried out using a survey, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 24 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and Excel 2019.
Results: Most students have an average level of knowledge about contraceptives (56.6%). Condoms (59.8%) and birth control pills (13.5%) were the most commonly used methods. Protection against STIs and their effectiveness were the main reasons for choosing these methods.
Conclusions: Knowledge levels are insufficient; therefore, providing college students with information from reliable sources can help address their lack of education and improve the quality of their sexual and reproductive health.
