Clinical, dermatoscopic, and ultrasonographic correlation of squamous cell carcinoma. Lucía Íñiguez Hospital, February 2023–November 2024

Introduction: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common skin cancer; although histopathology remains the gold standard, noninvasive techniques such as dermoscopy and ultrasonography are emerging as complementary tools.
Objective: To describe the clinical, dermatoscopic, and ultrasonographic correlation of squamous cell carcinoma at Lucia Iñiguez Hospital during the period from February 2023 to November 2024.
Method: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted on 32 patients in the Dermatology Department of the “Lucía Íñiguez Landín” Clinical Surgical Hospital. The study population consisted of all patients in the institution’s Dermatology Department—including both outpatients and inpatients—with a presumptive diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma at admission, totaling 72 patients. The sample consisted of 32 patients, selected through non-probabilistic sampling based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results: The study showed a predominance of male patients (65.6 %), a concentration in the 60–74 age group (50 %), phototype II (56.2 %), and head-and-neck localization (59.4 %). Dermoscopy was positive in 84.4 % of cases, and ultrasonography was positive in 87.5 %.
Conclusions: Dermatoscopy (84.4 %) and ultrasound (87.5 %) showed high positive rates, with an overall agreement of 90.6 % and a statistically significant association. These findings validate the complementary use of both noninvasive methods in the presumptive diagnosis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
