Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in women, often requiring a mastectomy, a procedure that entails physical, emotional, and social repercussions. In this context, nursing care is essential for postoperative recovery, providing comprehensive support and education in self-care.
Objective: To describe the main nursing care for patients undergoing mastectomy due to breast cancer.
Method: The databases used for the search were Medline (PubMed), Elsevier, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), and Dialnet, with the aim of identifying information on nursing care for patients undergoing mastectomy due to breast cancer. A systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA methodology, which included studies published from 2018 in scientific databases.
Development: It was evidenced that nursing intervention improves functional recovery and emotional well-being, under a multidisciplinary and personalized approach that considers all surgical stages. Nursing educational intervention in the psychological field can significantly improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Conclusions: Nursing staff play a fundamental role in the care of mastectomized patients, based on a proper comprehensive assessment throughout the entire surgical process, especially in the postoperative period, providing emotional and psychological support, as well as education and promotion of self-care.
