Aplicación de fibras de polietileno como alternativa a los pernos de fibra de vidrio en rehabilitación protésica

Fiberglass posts are used in the rehabilitation of teeth with high coronary loss, especially after endodontic treatment, due to their elastic modulus similar to that of dentin and their effective adhesion by means of resin cements. However, advances in restorative materials have led to the incorporation of polyethylene fibers (Ribbond), a less invasive alternative that allows the fabrication of thinner posts, reducing the need for extensive debonding and favoring the preservation of tooth tissue. This study compares the effectiveness of polyethylene and glass fiber fibers in oral rehabilitation through a literature review of 13 scientific articles. The results indicate that polyethylene fibers offer a similar resistance to dental tissues, allowing a better adaptation in root canals and decreasing the risk of fractures. In conclusion, the use of polyethylene fibers could be a viable option in certain clinical cases. Its application requires adequate technical knowledge and specialized training to ensure safe procedures that preserve tooth structure and optimize long-term functionality.
