The practice of informed consent in dentistry

Abstract

Informed consent is a fundamental principle in dentistry, which ensures that patients understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives of proposed treatments. Through this process, patient autonomy is respected and allows them to make informed decisions about their oral health. The present research aims to analyze the current state of knowledge on the practice of informed consent in the field of dentistry. A systematic search was conducted in academic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) using strategic keywords. The selected articles were subjected to defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, followed by a critical analysis of the relevant literature. The literature reviewed highlights the importance of clear and transparent communication between the dentist and the patient, as well as the need to provide understandable and accessible information. Despite advances, the implementation of informed consent continues to vary, and its proper compliance is crucial for professional ethics and patient safety, as an essential tool for ethical, legal, and patient-centered dental practice. This review highlights best practices and challenges faced by professionals in effectively applying this concept.
