Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) has been defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a birth weight of less than 2500 grams, regardless of gestational age and cause. An LBW infant has a twenty times greater chance of dying than a newborn with normal weight.
Objective: To evaluate the risk relationship between certain maternal risk factors and low birth weight.
Method: An observational, analytical case-control study was conducted. The universe consisted of 466 live births in the municipality in 2023, and the sample consisted of 42 low birth weight cases and 84 controls with a weight greater than 2500 grams. The information was collected from the medical records of the mothers. The Epidat program for epidemiological analysis of tabulated data, version 3.1, was used.
Results: Pregnant women with IUGR and those who had a preterm birth had the highest odds ratios (OR) at 66.6 and 33.2, respectively. Those who had insufficient weight gain, as well as older mothers, had an OR of 4.7, and those who had a urinary tract infection had an OR of 4.5.
Conclusions: The factors identified with the strongest association with LBW risk were urinary tract infection, older mothers, insufficient weight gain, prematurity, and IUGR.
