Epidemic behavior of COVID-19. Rafael Freyre Torres municipality, Holguín, 2021-2022
Abstract
Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, responsible for COVID-19 disease, had caused more than 600 million cases worldwide and more than 6.8 million deaths by early March 2023, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Objectives: To characterize the epidemiological behavior of COVID-19 in Rafael Freyre Torres municipality during the years 2021-2022.
Method: Using the information contained in database elaborated during the pandemic period, a transversal observational descriptive investigation was done to characterize the behavior of COVID-19 by months, age groups, sex, urban or rural area and residence of cases, using the statistical-mathematic method.
Results: Children under 2 years of age with 216 cases and a rate of 24000.0 x 105 inhabitants, the female sex with 1709 cases and a morbidity rate of 6546.6x 105 inhabitants, and urban areas with 1636 cases and a rate of 7390.0 x 105 inhabitants were at the highest epidemiological risk of disease. A significant incidence of imported cases was observed, which accounted for 242 cases, 7.6% of the total.
Conclusions: During the years 2021 and 2022, COVID-19 in the municipality of Rafael Freyre affected mostly children under two years old, the female sex and urban areas.
