Abstract

Introduction: Understanding the impact of hormonal changes in pregnancy for the onset and evolution of periodontal disease, constitutes an important link in the development of therapeutic approaches for pregnant women.

Objective: To determine the relationship between periodontal status and serum estradiol and progesterone levels in pregnant women.

Method: A cross-sectional, analytical study in 55 pregnant women belonging to Manuel Díaz Legrá Health Area of Holguín province, was carried out between January and June 2021. Periodontal status was determined by grouping codes of the revised WHO Russell's Periodontal Index. The serum levels of estradiol and progesterone were obtained by in vitro immunological examination of electrochemiluminescence. Analysis of the relationship between variables was established by Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests.  The percentage of error tolerated was 5 %.

Results: Relationship of periodontal status between healthy pregnant women, with gingivitis or with periodontitis according to serum levels of estradiol (p=0.051) and progesterone (p=0.050) hormones. There were statistically significant differences between pregnant women with periodontitis and gingivitis with respect to estradiol (p=0.016) and progesterone (p=0.019) levels.

Conclusions: There was no correlation between the different periodontal conditions and the serum estradiol and progesterone levels in pregnant women; however, among the affected women, there was a correspondence between the lowest hormone levels and those with destruction in the deep tissues of the periodontium.
