Author Guidelines

STRUCTURE OF EACH TYPE OF ARTICLE

Original article

They are the result of original research, whose objective is to contribute an aspect of knowledge that has been identified as lacking. They are the most important type of article for the journal. Included in this typology are those dealing with pedagogical research (Medical Education), those dealing with partial results of ongoing research (Brief Communication) or those dealing with research on the search, retrieval, processing and application of information related to health research (Information Literacy).

Review article

May be submitted spontaneously by the authors or by authors designated by the Editorial Board of the journal because of their in-depth knowledge of the topic of interest.

Case presentation

Contains presentations of clinical cases of interest to the journal's audience.

Letter to the Editor

They are preferably used to comment on contributions previously published by the CCM journal or to respond to opinions, criticisms and suggestions made by the readers of a given publication.

Editorial

Editorials are written by the Editor of the journal or are commissioned by the Editorial Committee of the journal to certain personalities. They may present the journal's point of view on a given topic, as well as refer to editorial policies, and more than one editorial may be published in each volume.

Point of view

Contains materials where the author, who is usually a recognized personality specialized in the subject, expresses his personal and subjective opinion as ideas, criteria, suggestions or opinions in general regarding medical issues in their broadest denomination. Unlike Editorials, the Editorial Board may not share the criteria expressed by their authors.

METHODOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS COMMON TO ALL TYPES OF ARTICLES

Papers must be unpublished. In case they have been made public, which may occur in any event, the author has the duty to communicate it.

As part of a necessary analysis of the journal's policy in relation to the new international guidelines for scientific communication, the editorial committee has decided that all research articles (original articles, review articles and case reports) are required to present the section “scientific contribution”, where it will be described, in a few words, what is the contribution that this research makes to science (local or universal).
This section will be placed at the end of the discussion and before the conclusions.

Formal aspects of the manuscript
Correo Científico Médico publishes articles in Spanish and English. When the article is in English, it must be reviewed by an English-speaking person before submission to the journal, and must include the complete manuscript in English and Spanish. Regardless of the language, the manuscript must comply with the specifications of structure and format that correspond to the type of article.

Guidelines for the publication of specific designs
La Revista Correo Científico Médico recommends following the latest versions of the following guidelines: STROBE for the publication of observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort), available in Spanish at Gac Sanit. 2008;22(2):144-50; CONSORT for clinical trials; STARD for articles on diagnostic tests; QUOROM for meta-analyses of clinical trials; PRISMA 2020 (http://www.prisma-statement.org/?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1) for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of studies that evaluate health interventions with an equity focus. The guidelines are available on the EQUATOR Initiative website (http://www.equator-network.org/).

Manuscript Submission Guidelines: The submitted paper should have clarity and consistency of wording, syntax, and spelling. The text should be submitted in electronic WORD text format with Calibri 12 font and 1.5 line spacing in all sections and with pages numbered at the bottom. The page size should be 8 and a half by 11 inches.

To use an abbreviation, it shall be specified the first time it is used, with the complete term to which it refers, except in the case of units of measurement, which shall be in the International System of Units. In the text, acronyms or abbreviations should not be excessive, not less than three times.

Abbreviations are not accepted in the title or abstract. Decimal places are separated from units by a comma and thousands are indicated by a period.

In articles in English, the corresponding punctuation should be followed (units with a period and thousands with a comma).

The use of neutral terms (e.g., childhood instead of children) and non-sexist language (e.g., the person who contributes the most to the household instead of “head of household”) is recommended. The concepts of sex and gender should not be used interchangeably because they have different meanings.

Compressed files in any format are not accepted.

Title: The title should adequately describe the content of the paper. It should be written avoiding imprecise or misleading expressions, and as brief, clear and informative as possible. The use of acronyms, codes and symbols that are not commonly used should be avoided. It shall not exceed fifteen words. If names of institutions are used, they should be official and up to date. If the study focuses on a specific population group (only women or only men, elderly people, immigrant population...), the title should mention this population group. Split titles or titles with subtitles are not published.

Authors: Name(s), surname(s) (one or two, according to the bibliographic signature of each author) and, by means of the corresponding superscript Arabic numerals, the name of the department(s) or institution(s) to which they belong, including the city and country, should appear. The academic degree or professional category of the authors should not be indicated. The ORCID of all authors should be included next to the first and last names. The author's postal and e-mail address for correspondence should be included. It is required to state at the end of the manuscript the specific contribution of each author to the research.
Authors should provide the primary data records used for the original articles.

Authorship contributions: In this section, at the end of the manuscript, a paragraph should be included clearly specifying the contribution of each of the authors.

For original research manuscripts.
With the aim of establishing a standardization for the mention of the roles of authorship contribution in ORIGINAL research manuscripts, Correo Científico Médico Journal assumes the methodology of the CrediT taxonomy, which can be consulted at:

http://www.ecimed.sld.cu/2020/06/27/taxonomia-credit/

This taxonomy distributes the roles of participation in 14 typologies through which an author can be recognized in the publication. Among which we can mention: conceptualization, data curation, formal analysis, acquisition of funds, administration, project management, research, methodology, resources, software, supervision, validation, visualization, writing the original draft and finally writing (review and editing).

Namely, each role is defined as follows:

-Conceptualization - Ideas; formulation or evolution of overall research objectives and goals.

-Data Curation - Management activities to annotate (produce metadata), clean data, and maintain research data (including software code, when necessary to interpret the data itself) for initial use and subsequent reuse.
-Formal analysis - Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize study data.
-Fund Acquisition - Acquisition of financial support for the project leading to this publication.
-Research - Conducting an investigation and research process, specifically performing experiments, or collecting data/evidence.
-Methodology - Development or design of methodology; creation of models.
-Project administration - Management responsibility and coordination of the planning and execution of the research activity.
-Resources - Provision of study materials, reagents, materials, patients, laboratory specimens, animals, instrumentation, computing resources or other analytical tools.
-Software - Programming, software development; design of computer programs; implementation of computer code and supporting algorithms; testing of existing code components.
-Supervision - Supervisory and leadership responsibility for planning and execution of research activities, including mentoring external to the core team.
-Validation - Verification, either as part of the activity or separately, of overall replicability/reproducibility of results/experiments and other research products.
-Visualization - Preparation, creation and/or presentation of published work, specifically visualization/presentation of data.
-Writing - original draft - Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work, specifically the writing of the initial draft (including substantive translation).
-Writing - review and editing - Preparation, creation and/or presentation of the published work by members of the original research group, specifically critical review, commentary or revision - including pre- or post-publication stages.

This identification will be made exclusively for research articles.

The authorship roles will be identified in the order shown below, including each author/s in the role/s that correspond to him/her, and omitting the roles that do not apply in each case.

The journal will name the authorship roles as follows, regardless of the numbering:

The authorship contribution will be:

1. Conceptualization: xxxxxx

2. Data curation: xxxxxx

3. Formal analysis: xxxxxx

4. Research: xxxxxx

5. Research: xxxxxx

6. Methodology: xxxxxx

7. Project management: xxxxxx

8. Resources: xxxxxx

9. Software: xxxxxx

10. Supervision: xxxxxx

11. Validation: xxxxxx

12. Viewing: xxxxxx

13. Writing - original draft: xxxxxx

14. Writing - proofreading and editing: xxxxxx

For NON-ORIGINAL research manuscripts.
The uniform requirements for submission of manuscripts to scientific journals state that authorships should be based on substantial contribution, which should be given simultaneously to:
 - The conception and design of the work, or to the collection of data, or to the analysis and interpretation of the data.
 - The writing of the article or its critical revision with important intellectual contributions.
 - Approval of the final version for publication.
 - To be responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the manuscript have been reviewed and discussed among the authors with the aim of presenting them with maximum accuracy and completeness.

These criteria can be corroborated and expanded in different sources of information available in the following links, among others:

All of these conditions must be met, since exclusive participation in the search and fundraising, data collection or statistical analysis, for example, does not justify authorship, nor does overall supervision of the work. The main author, as well as the person responsible for correspondence, must ensure that all persons included really meet the criteria for authorship, and that no one is excluded who also meets them.
The inclusion of this information is a prerequisite for consideration of the manuscript by the editorial board.

Authorship. Authorship basically implies a significant intellectual contribution to the article. For all articles, the corresponding author should specify the contributions of each of the signatories. Exceptionally, due to the complexity and participation of multiple institutions in an investigation, more than six authors may participate in an original article. The Revista Correo Científico Médico will be especially vigilant in ensuring that the authorship criteria are met in manuscripts with more than six authors. In a manuscript with more than six authors, it is more difficult to meet the authorship criteria proposed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors than in a manuscript with fewer authors. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of manuscripts with multicenter studies in which many of the authors from each center are limited to the recruitment of subjects, thus failing to comply with the internationally recognized authorship criteria.

Bibliographical references:

Bibliographical references will be identified by callout in superscript Arabic numerals in parentheses and numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance. Citations should be placed immediately after the period and the rest of the main delimiting signs (comma, semicolon, and colon or ellipsis).

Personal communications and manuscripts not accepted for publication should not appear in the bibliography.

Footnotes for comments and bibliographies are not allowed.

Only relevant and pertinent bibliography for the article should be cited.

This will always appear at the end of the document. Articles “in press” should be cited as such, if available the DOI of the manuscript should be included, and whenever possible the authors should update the reference. Journal abbreviations should follow the US National Library of Medicine abbreviations for Medline/PubMed. In the case of a journal not included in Medline/PubMed, the full name of the journal should be given, without abbreviations.

Bibliographic citations must correspond to the references and the links must give access to the full text of the article and not only to its abstract. References whose links direct to articles that must be paid to read or download are not accepted.

References that constitute self-citations cannot exceed 15% of the total number of references.

It is necessary that 70% of the references be within the last five years.

When indicating the initial and final pages of a citation, only the digits that differ from those of the initial page should be used for the final page (examples: 34-9, and not 34-39; 136-41 and not 136-141).

The Revista Correo Científico Médico follows the guidelines described in the Recommendations for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Vancouver Style): http://bvs.sld.cu/revistas/recursos/vancouver_2012.pdf

Tables: They should be numbered with Roman numerals (Table I, Table 2, etc.) in the order of appearance in the text.

They should be editable, not in image form.

Authors should be sure to cite the tables within the text, so that the reader is prepared for the information presented in the tables.

The title should be brief, but sufficiently explanatory, in its upper part, without a period.

Tables should have automatic Web 1 formatting, should not be shaded, and should not have empty cells.

Each column of the table should have a brief heading. They must include the necessary explanatory notes at the foot of the table and use lowercase letters in superscript and in alphabetical order (*,a, b...).

Each table will have a maximum length of one page. In exceptional and justified cases, they may be longer. Tables should be submitted in Word format, which allows them to be editable.

Statistical measures of variability, such as standard deviation and standard error of the mean, should also be identified.

If data from another source, published or unpublished, are used, permission should be obtained and the complete data from the source should be mentioned.

Figures: Figures should not repeat data already presented in the text or tables. They should be presented in editable format, in the case of photographs (300 dpi). They should be of adequate quality and should not exceed 800 pixels in width.

The title should be brief, but sufficiently explanatory, at the bottom, without a period.

Figures should be identified with Arabic numerals that coincide with their order of appearance in the text. Authors should be sure to cite figures within the text, prior to their presentation, in order to prepare the reader for the information presented.

Figure legends or captions should contain sufficient information to be able to interpret the data presented without resorting to the text. Explanatory footnotes to figures should be called out with lowercase letters in superscript and in alphabetical order (a, b...).

In case the figures or tables are not of the authors' own elaboration, but taken from an outside source of information, the authors must request permission to reproduce them and attach such permission in the manuscript submission. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to partially reproduce such materials (text, tables or figures). These permissions should be requested both from the responsible author and from the publisher of the publication.

Figures and photographs should be submitted in a high professional quality. Images of figures should be submitted in the following formats: *.JPG and *.PNG; depending on the content of the text.

Microphotographs should have internal scale indicators. Symbols, arrows or letters used in the microphotographs must contrast with the background.

If photographs of people are used, either the subjects should not be identifiable or their photographs should be accompanied by written permission to use them. Whenever possible, permission for publication should be obtained.

Units of measurement

Measurements of length, height, weight and volume should be provided in metric units (meter, kilogram or liter) or in decimal multiples or submultiples.

Temperatures should be expressed in degrees Celsius. Blood pressure should be measured in millimeters of mercury.

For hematological, clinical chemistry, or other measurements, authors should provide measurements according to the International System of Units (SI). Editors may request alternative or non-SI units from authors prior to publication when SI units are not universally used. Drug concentrations may be given in SI or mass units, but if appropriate both may be provided, the alternative measurement should be written in parentheses.

Conflicts of interest. Manuscripts submitted to the Revista Correo Científico Médico must be accompanied at the end of the manuscript by a declaration of the possible conflicts of interest of each of the signatories. Conflicts of interest can be occupational, research, economic or moral. Authors, when submitting the manuscript, should indicate in writing if any of these conflicts exist. The editors may require the authors to expand or detail this declaration of conflicts as much as they deem appropriate. Likewise, if there is no conflict of interest, this should be explicitly stated. The Revista Correo Científico Médico adheres to the latest version of the rules of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which extends conflicts of interest to the authors' relatives and persons living with them. The inclusion of this information is an indispensable requirement in all the types of articles described above in order to be considered by the editorial committee.
