Evaluación del uso de restricciones fÃsicas en pacientes con demencias

Se estudió el uso de restricciones fÃsicas en las personas mayores, especÃficamente en las personas con demencia. A pesar de constituir una práctica diaria en los diferentes escenarios donde se atienden ancianos, el tema se ha estudiado poco en Cuba. Se mostraron las formas y medios de restricción, factores de riesgos directos e indirectos, asà como sus consecuencias biológicas, funcionales, psicológicas y sociales. Además, se realizó una valoración de todos estos factores en el caso particular del paciente con demencia con vistas a proponer pautas de actuación y manejo de esta clase de pacientes. También se sugirieron medidas a nivel institucional para perfeccionar la toma de decisiones sobre las restricciones fÃsicas en los distintos niveles de atención. Se concluyó que es necesaria la realización de nuevos estudios para conocer cómo se comportan los factores de riesgos de restricciones fÃsicas en el paÃs y a partir de sus resultados, elaborar programas de capacitación, entrenamiento y control para el personal de salud.

ABSTRACT
The use of physical restraints in the elderly, and especifically in patients with dementia are analized. This topic has been little studied in Cuba in spite of this one is considered as a daily practice in the different settings the elderly people are assisted. Restraints devices, restraints ways, direct and indirect risks factors, and the biological, functional, psychological and social consequences were assessed. Some aproaches were proposed in order to manage the elderly patients with dementia. A series of measures regarding physical restrains were also suggested at institutional level. The authors concluded that it was necessary to carry out new studies aimed at knowing the risk factors of physical restraints behavior in our country, and to elaborate training, education and control programs.
