Atención hospitalaria al paciente con demencia

Resumen

Se estudiaron las características del paciente con demencia en el medio hospitalario, donde crece el número de ancianos con esta enfermedad. La mayor parte de los adultos mayores ingresan con mayor frecuencia por otras causas que por alteraciones relacionadas con el cuadro demencial. Se apreciaron dificultades en el personal de salud en general para reconocer, manejar y tratar este padecimiento en un escenario donde el entrenamiento para su atención es insuficiente. Se recomendaron algunas normas de actuación en general y en particular para los Servicios de Ugencia  y salas de hospitalización, así como para el perfil clínico y quirúrgico. La introducción de entrenamientos, dirigidos fundamentalmente a médicos y enfermeras, centrados en las necesidades del paciente con demencia y su reacción en el medio hospitalario, podría elevar significativamente la satisfacción del paciente y su cuidador.

ABSTRACT

The characteristics of dementia patients in hospital setting were considered in this paper. The increment of the number of old persons with this illness leads to an increase of the patients in the hospitals. Most of these patients are admitted at hospitals because of comorbility and not because of the clinical manifestations. Different difficulties on recognition, management and treatment of the disease at hospital were taken into consideration. Some rules of performance in a general and particular way were taking into account, especially in Emengency Service and hospital wards. The introduction of training for doctors and nurses in order to treat  and assist dementia patients will help to improve the quality of life of these patients.
